Instant messaging is primarily related to mobile phones and tablets. It's used to keep users in touch no matter where they are. Still, it's important to have access to your IM apps even when using your PC or your laptop. WhatsApp has launched a desktop client so let's see what it's all about.
The WhatsApp Desktop app can be downloaded and installed rather easily. In order to activate it on your computer, you'll need to open WhatsApp on your mobile device and scan the QR code that shows up to validate your phone number. This means you still can't use WhatsApp without installing the mobile app and registering your phone number.
The app looks quite similar to the mobile version. It appears quite simplistic and elegant when compared to other PC apps that sometimes look a bit bloated with features. You have access to most mobile functionalities like group chats, sending photos, videos, and contacts, and the communication is still encrypted end-to-end.
However, a big minus is the lack of audio/video calls in one-to-one conversations. We are not sure why they decided to omit this feature but we hope it will be provided in future updates. Also, you are not able to post a Status using the desktop client.
WhatsApp desktop is a useful app to have installed on your PC but, as of today, it's nowhere near the mobile app when it comes to its functionality. Let's hope everything that's missing will be included in future updates!
